Dairy Tips & Strategies

Buy lowfat or nonfat yogurt in large containers, if possible. For example, a 32-ounce store brand container of nonfat vanilla yogurt provides four 8-ounce servings or five and a third 6-ounce servings at a cost of about $0.38 per 6-ounce serving. Individual 6-ounce cartons of yogurt are often between $0.50 and $0.99 each, depending on the brand and variety. Add your own diced fruit or try dried fruit or nuts for a change of pace.

Money-Saving Storage Tip

Margarines will keep in the refrigerator, unopened, for 4-5 months. Once opened, they will keep for 1 month. Butter, however, should be used within a month. If you're not able to use the whole package in that time, then freeze it and pull out what you want as needed.
