Dr. Barb believes that if you eat a well balanced, nutritious diet, then you don't need a lot of supplements. Multivitamins that meet the Recommended Dietary Allowances for essential vitamns and minerals are not a danger for most people. Mega doses, however, are neither necessary nor recommended and can really impact your pocketbook. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 identified some substances that are commonly lacking in the "average" American diet. These are potassium, dietary fiber, calcium, and vitamin D. These deficiencies can be met with increased intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nonfat or lowfat dairy products, seafoods, and healthy oils. However, it is challenging to meet one's nutrient needs without exceeding your caloric needs for the day.
